Voices of Female College Students from India

Below are few artworks by self-identified victim-survivors of gender-based violence at the “Indian University” (site of my dissertation research, pseudonym). The artworks foreground, inter alia, the participants’ experiences with transphobia, Islamophobia, dating violence, and date-rape at the Indian University. At the time of the research study, all the artists were enrolled in undergraduate courses and participated in two rounds of art-based narrative interviews with me.

The artists is a transmasculine person in the final year of college, who is also a part of the of the college queer society.
The artist is a Muslim student who was asked by right-wing affiliated political students at her college to remove her Hijab.
The artist is a final year Sociology honours students who is in a physically and sexually abusive relationship with her partner.
The artist is a final year English honours students at the Indian University.
The artist is a final year psychology honours students who was threatened and intimidated by a male college professor. To quote her, “I painted flowers in water, the ones that belong on land, because I felt so out of breath, so unequipped, and so inept to be thrown in the situation. I wanted redemption, and felt envy because I didn’t think I was strong and smart as other students”
The artist is a final year student who was a victim of date rape.
